Skid Control Courses
In addition to our regular review & observed drives, we also offer access to
other driving-related courses, including Motorway Guidance and Skid Control.
Do you feel apprehensive, lacking in confidence, and sometimes not really
sure of what to do on a Motorway? Or do you avoid motorway driving completely,
preferring to stick to the back roads ? Well let us help you!
Motorway driving today often forms the backbone of many longer distance
journeys. It's also an integral part of advanced driving and typcially forms part
of the Advanced Driving Test. To help prepare for this, we can arrange an
extended 2 hour observed drive, concentrating predominantly on motorway driving
& techniques. These are available to both full & Associate members.

Each course includes ...
- A short pre-drive briefing covering the primary aspects of motorway driving, including legal
requirements & driving techniques.
- An extended drive with one of our fully trained Observers. You drive your car,
mostly on motorways, putting the theory into practice.
- A short debrief, giving you time to ask any other questions you may have and
to gain further insight from your Observer.
Courses are integrated into our Sunday morning observed drives from both
centres.
For more information or to book an extended drive, please contact
Drive Bookings.
It's wet, or even worse icy on the road and you're approaching a bend in the
road. You go for the brakes but ...
- Just how fast should you approach this hazard under these conditions ?
- How hard can you hit the brakes ?
- What would happen if you hit them too hard ?
- What happens if someone also brakes too hard ?
The chances are you may not know - after all, you don't go skidding round to the
shops in the snow. But wouldn't it be better to find out under controlled
conditions with people who do this for a living ?

In conjunction with our friends down at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, we continue
to offer this ever popular skid training course. Each course lasts approx. 3 hours
and gives you a real insight into skidding, skid avoidance & recovery, using the centre's purpose built skid surface.
The course will teach you ...
- The skills needed to detect a skid earlier
- How to take the appropriate action to control your vehicle in slippery and
adverse driving conditions
Anti-skid tuition is given on a real skid surface in safe
conditions using the school's own vehicles. Each course will have up to six
participants and covers front and rear wheel skids plus emergency braking. After
a classroom briefing and practical demonstration by the instructor, the group are taught the skills and then have a chance to practise them.
The programme is an important addition to both IAM better driving courses
and advanced test preparation. Offering the opportunity for practicing the
skills taught in a safe environment, this course gives you a chance to try it
out before it happens for real. |
Please contact our Skidpan
Co-ordinator for more information and to register your interest for the
forthcoming courses. These courses are primarily for IAM members or prospective
members, but members' friends and families are welcome too.
