  • The accident rate for all drivers in the UK was 2 or 3 times higher than for those who took the IAM Test (passed and failed).

  • The safest cars are those driven by the safest drivers so tuition in 'defensive driving' techniques is the most reliable safety measure of all.

  • Road accidents account for 96% of ALL transport deaths (road, rail, air and water).

  • Experience, rather than age, is the principal factor in accidents. Inexperienced drivers are lacking in hazard perception. A 17 year old car driver is 7 times more likely to have an accident than a mid 50's driver

  • By teaching 'Roadcraft' methods, the Hendon Police Driving School was able to reduce accidents from 1 in 9,000 miles run to 1 in 25,000 miles run, and subsequently this accident rate fell to 1 in 72,587 miles run.

What some new IAM members had to say about their experience of Skill for Life

"I took part in the Skills for Life program just after I had passed my driving test aged 17. At first I wondered how it would help me...I had just passed my test - surely I was the best driver I could be? I soon learnt this wasn't the case! Skill for Life taught me so much more than I could have imagined, by spending more time in my car and driving on different types of roads it put everything into perspective. I would definitely say the skills I learnt were priceless and I emerged from the program a much better driver. I also ride a R6 motorbike so in the future will be looking at taking my Skill for Life program for that. You never stop learning...." (Carly Smith)

"I’m amazed the pleasure driving gives me, thanks to you!" (Esther Rantzen, CBE)

"Being on the Skill for Life course has taught me not only about my driving, but I also appreciate my car and look after it more. I wish it hadn’t taken an accident to get me on the Skill for Life course, I wish I’d done it much sooner. I have my confidence back again and drive much better than I ever have; in fact on average I’m getting 50 miles extra per tank of fuel, that’s brilliant! I haven’t enjoyed driving this much since I was a teenager! One important lesson though was realising that nobody is the perfect driver and you keep on learning every day." (Rachel Godfroy)

"After five runs my driving was safer and much more enjoyable. The tuition was relaxed and effective.  I have now become a group Observer and it is now rewarding to pass on advanced driving skills to others." (Alan Penman, Stenhousemuir)
