Events & Meetings

SLAM works to deliver a full programme of events during the year which include the following ...
  • Review & Check Drives at our assessment centres ...

  • Indoor events including social meetings & talks
  • Motorway Guidance Courses
  • Skidpan Training Courses
  • Outdoor events & promotions

These activities are open to non-members as well as members, with the exception of our Motorway Guidance courses. So please note the dates above and come along - you'll receive a warm welcome. When applying to attend tours, please note that due to the small numbers allowed on these events, priority is for members and one guest, followed by additional members' guest, and then non-members.

If we get enough interest - another trip will be arranged, so do apply!

Motorway Guidance

Do you feel apprehensive, lacking in confidence, and sometimes not really sure of what to do on a Motorway? Do you avoid Motorway Driving completely? Well let us help you deal with this!

On nominated Sundays (watch this space for dates), we run two sessions consisting of a half-hour talk covering motorway and driving techniques, followed by a one hour drive, mostly on Motorways - you drive your car, accompanied by a fully trained Observer.

At the end of the drive, a short debriefing chat takes place and a record form is completed for you to take away.

Please Note ...
  • Courses are held at our Banstead assessment centre throughout the year
  • Sessions start at 9 am and 10.30 am, each lasting approximately 1.5 hours

These courses are often very popular & space is limited ...

  • We cannot accept non-members or Learner Drivers on this course.
  • Cheques should be made payable to "South of London Group of Advanced Motorists".
  • Telephone & email bookings will be held for 7 days only pending payment.

Skidpan Training

After the fantastic success of previous courses, we are delighted in continuing to offer Skid Pan sessions again this year. Held at the Goodwood Race Course site, these courses last 3 hours and provide anti-skid tuition using the centre's purpose built skid surface.

The course will teach you the skills to detect skids earlier and to take the appropriate action to control your vehicle in slippery and adverse driving conditions. All anti-skid tuition given on a real skid surface in safe conditions using the school's own vehicles.

The course will have up to up to six participants and covers front and rear wheel skids plus emergency braking. One car is used for this session.

The programme is an important cornerstone for both IAM better driving courses and advanced test preparation. Offering the opportunity for practicing the skills taught in a safe environment gives you a chance to try it out before it could count for real.

After a classroom briefing and practical demonstration by the instructor, members of the group are taught the skills and then have a chance to practice them. The numbers involved allows for more support from the instructor and therefore is beneficial even to the more nervous participant.

Please contact our Skidpan Co-ordinator to register your interest for the forthcoming courses.

These courses are primarily for IAM members or prospective members, but members' friends and families are welcome too.
